Adaptive Computerised Numerical Control of Grinding Process for Industrial Applications

  • Chapter

Abstract

An adaptive control technique is developed for Computerised Numerical Control (CNC) of the grinding process with special reference to obtaining of the desired surface finish and dimensional accuracy in a typical industrial type cylindrical plunge or form grinding operation.

The grinding process is mathematically modelled based upon past researches and experimental measurements, and an Adaptive Control Optimisation algorithm is formulated. This algorithm, which can be incorporated in the software of a CNC system or within a separate microprocessor in an outer adaptive control loop, will automatically control the wheel feed rate, wheel speed, work speed and wheel dressing condition in order to ensure optimum grinding conditions and to obtain the desired surface finish and accuracy.

The developed Adaptive Computer Control (ACC) of grinding process is realised by in-process sensing, analysis and optimisation of grinding parameters using appropriately fitted transducers on the machine.
