Summary
One of the most essential features of the chip formation process is probably the dynamic cutting force in the shear zone.
A new sensor for the measurement of these cutting forces has been developed. The dynamic cutting force components can be measured by using this piezo electric sensor directly under the insert. Along with conven¬tional accelerometer measurements on the tool holder, the transfer function of the system has been obtained. The new force sensor and the results are described and discussed in the paper.
By comparing the information from the transducers with metalographic samples, extended experiments and tests have showed that this method can be very useful for the basic understanding of the mechanism of the cutting process. Also information of the segmentation frequency in the cutting zone has been obtained.
Information of the flank wear propagation can also be obtained form the newly developed sensor. Thus future developments towards an in-process sensor could be expected.
