Analysis in Workability of Pipe Bending Using High Frequency Induction Heating

  • Chapter

Summary

An investigation on pipe bending, using high frequency induction heating is done. The materials of pipes used have been mild steel and austenitic stainless steel.

The pipes are seamless ones with an outside diameter of 45mm. The wall thickness/outside diameter ratio of all the pipes used in this analysis and experiments is between 0. 033 and 0. 089. The buckling occurred at bent inside of pipes can be prevented by heating width less than two times as long as the wall thickness. And the reduction of wall thickness at bent outside that is fault of this method can be prevented by loading axial compressive force and giving circumferential temperature gradient. These experimental results are compared with analytical results. The temperature distribution that is an important factor of this method has been calculated by the finite element method.

On the basis of experimental results and analytical results, bending radius is minimized to r=1.5-D0. (D0:outside diameter of pipe)
