On the Hot Extrolling of Aluminium

Summary

This project is a continuation of research work on the process of combined rolling and extrusion (extrolling) intended for the continuous extrusion of large weights of prismatic sections having complex shapes. The present work has been extended to include ‘hot extrolling’ of aluminium alloys in the range of temperatures 450°C to 575°C at reductions of area up to 80 per cent. A comprehensive theory of rolling developed some time ago by one of the authors has been extended to include extrolling and is used to clarify and explain the experimental results obtained. Mechanical testing of the products indicates that there is little difference between those produced by rolling, extrusion, or ‘extrolling’.
