Abstract

With one of the lowest literacy rates of the world, Haiti has nonetheless achieved a spectacular production of historical writings, a comprehensive list of which would include several hundred books and thousands of articles. The feat is even more impressive when we take note of the fact that few Haitian historians work in local archives. It is necessary to go abroad, to France especially, to gain access to primary materials related to the colonial period. Documents on pre- or post-independent Haiti in the Archives Nationales, in Port-au-Prince, have yet to be classified and restored for systematic historical use.
