Abstract
Although in 1490 Spain’s overseas possessions (the Canaries, enclaves in Africa) covered no more than 4000 sq. km, between 1493 and 1500 they spread to encompass 50000 sq. km, and from 1502 to 1515 there was a further increase to 250000 sq. km. Eventually, by about 1530, they totalled one and a half million square kilometres.
