Abstract

Previous chapters have provided an essentially structural account of cultural reproduction. But actors experience social process as punctuated moments or unique and compelling dramas that engage specific sets of competing interests (Turner 1957;Bourdieu 1977). This chapter draws upon a series of interrelated events in an analysis of conflict over authority, reproduction, and change in historical practice.
