Teaching about the Holocaust in Post-1989 Poland

This paper consists of two parts. The first part, based on a survey of 1,002 young people, attempts to describe current attitudes of Polish youth toward the Jews and toward the Holocaust. The survey was intended to influence school policy by indicating whether changes in the methodology of teaching about the Holocaust were needed. The picture that emerged is that attitudes toward Jews vary significantly between schools with different types of education, while attitudes toward the Holocaust are not consistent at all. A new approach in teaching is needed, and an example of a desirable programme is put forward in the second part of the paper.
