Directions in Holocaust Education in the 21st Century

Abstract

The difference between scholars and educators is that the former focus on research, whereas the latter continuously reevaluate their influence over students. As teachers, we do not only want to uncover what historically happened, but also to focus on the Shoah as a human story. Obviously, we must be vigilant in ensuring that Holocaust education will be based on historical accuracy. We also need to guide our students to question how the destruction of European Jewry occurred in a modem, western world. After all, who were the victims, bystanders and perpetrators? These were people living very similar lives to those that our students are living.
