Abstract

From 1095 until 1250 the original area of present-day Oporto (Portus Cale) expanded towards the south, adding to its territory the regions occupied by the Arabs. After 1250, when it had reached the southern coast of Algarve, Portugal had stable borders that remained unchanged in the subsequent centuries. The monarchy expanded its colonial possessions in Africa, Asia, and South America. From 1580 until 1640 the country was united with Spain.
