Abstract

With the territorial reorganization of Europe in 1815 after the Napoleonic wars (Congress of Vienna), the different German states covered approximately the territories of the Second German Empire (Zweites Reich or Altes Reich) unified by Bismarck in 1871. This empire in not the continuation of the First German Empire (Erstes Reich), that is, the Holy Roman Empire that in the sixteenth century assumed the name of Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation (Heiliges Römisches Reich deutscher Nation) which formally ended when Napoleon marched across the Rhine in 1806.
