Nicholas Hytner has been Associate Director at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, 1985–89, and subsequently at the Royal National Theatre, 1989–97. He is the director of many distinguished theatrical productions; for the RSC he was responsible for The Tempest (1988) and King Lear (1990); at the National he directed Alan Bennett’s adaptation of The Wind in the Willows (1990) and The Madness of George III (1991). In addition, he has directed operas and musicals — notably Miss Saigon (Drury Lane, 1989; Broadway, 1991) and Carousel (National Theatre, 1992). As a film director he has won plaudits for The Madness of King George (1994), The Crucible (1997), and The Object of My Affection (1998).
