Polish Tartars: Ethnic Ideology and State Policy

  • Chapter
The Politics of Ethnic Consciousness

Abstract

The ethnic ideology of Polish Tartars provides an interesting example of a minority ideology which is constructed in close relationship to the state and the national ideology of the — in this case Polish — majority. The nature of this relationship is determined by Tartars’ and Poles’ perceptions of existing differences and similarities between them. Polish Tartars — constituting a small ethnic group that has been living in Poland for more than 600 years — consider themselves Muslims with a common origin but at the same time stress sameness with Poles. Polish national identity, however, is largely based on being Catholic and includes negative stereotypes of Muslims and Tartars. Linguistically, however, Tartars cannot be differentiated from Poles.
