Abstract

Many people act on the assumption that there are only two varieties of English: good and bad. It is the purpose of this book to suggest that this view is mistaken, but any account of the varieties of English would be incomplete if it failed to consider how far ‘correct English’ can be accepted as one of the many varieties that exist.
