Perspectives on Gender Cultures in Élites

The transformation of gender relations in modern society is characterised by a considerable cultural lag. Strategies of gender equalisation based on structural changes often encounter a fairly unchanged symbolic order of gender difference and inequality. Conventional perceptions and feelings about gender, family, work and career apparently delegitimate endeavours to promote women’s integration into public life, particularly at the level of leadership and authority. At the top of political and economic institutions, occupied by the heirs of the ruling classes of previous centuries (Bottomore, 1993), gender parity is still far from being achieved.
