Abstract

In spite of its small size and modest economic ranking, Belgium is in many ways the pivotal country of the European Community. This is due largely to its central location both physically and in respect of economic activity and also to the fact that its capital city, Brussels, is now also the Community’s ‘capital’ and the major centre of EEC activities. Belgium has thus a position in the Community similar to that of Italy in the Catholic Church or Russia in the Communist world, and indeed she has always been one of the most committed and Community-minded of the Nine.
