Abstract

Of the Community’s four most important countries, Italy is the last to be considered, and in the period since the Second World War it has not had the degree of international charisma possessed by its three partners. France gave birth and substance to the Community idea, Germany has now become economically its strongest member state and Britain has had the most considerable involvement and influence outside Europe. Italy on the other hand has been somewhat in the background and has not had to the same extent the aura of a great power. This is largely due to its Fascist past, the persistence of relatively weak governments and the fact that until very recently it trailed well behind the others in economic attainment.
