Abstract
The Federal German Republic (West Germany) is economically the most powerful of the European Community’s member states. Its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is one-third that of the Community as a whole, and nearly one-third larger than that of France which comes next. It is the leading producer in a number of different sectors of manufacture, notably iron and steel, motor vehicles, electrical equipment, synthetic fabrics and chemicals, and is also the most important trading country, exporting twice as much as either France or Britain. The success of this great and powerful state is all the more remarkable when one considers that its economy was almost totally ruined during the Second World War, and virtually everything has had to be built up anew.
