Abstract
The novels of Charlotte Brontë have attracted enormous attention from the critics. The balance of criticism, however, is heavily weighted towards Jane Eyre, while at the other extreme, Shirley is rather neglected. This is a little odd, since many critics claim to respect the qualities of Villette most highly among the three novels.
