In and Out of the Digital Closet: The Self as Communication Network

  • Chapter
Cyberpsychology

Abstract

In spite of the differences between the various theories of the formation of personal identity that can be found in any traditional psychology textbook, there is one idea that is more or less common to all: the theory that identity is forged in social relations; that is, through contact with the other. Taking part in the semiotic exchanges of communication is the basic requirement for the formation and transformation of personal identity as an integrated and coherent entity. (The Latin root of the word ‘identity’ is idem, ‘the same’, the same entity.)
