Accelerating the acquisition of children’s abilities
To what extent is it possible to accelerate the acquisition of basic skills and capabilities by young children? Is attempting to do that desirable? If such acceleration is possible, are there undesirable side effects? Is it possible for ordinary adults to gain exceptional skills? These important questions are addressed in this chapter and the one that follows it. In the present chapter the emphasis is upon what can be achieved. The following chapter examines the roles of parents and others in encouraging children to extend their capabilities, and also raises questions about the desirability of attempting to accelerate development.
