Abstract

Home and family backgrounds affect young people in numerous ways. Families differ greatly in the extent to which they value and encourage intellectual activities, and in the degree to which pursuits that have a broadly educational function are given priority. Families also vary in the kinds of role models they provide. Also, they differ in the degree to which they give a child opportunities to identify with successful individuals.
