  • Chapter
Development, Governance and the Environment in South Asia

Abstract

Studies addressing gender issues in socioeconomic development have proliferated in the last two decades (see for example, Roy et al. 1996). Declaration by the United Nations of 1975 as the International Women’s Year and 1975–85 as the United Nations Decade for Women as well as international bodies and non-governmental organisations have been significant factors in generating heightened awareness of gender matters on development.
