Abstract
It has become increasingly commonplace to stress the importance of an adequate national export performance in the context of a globalising economy. More specifically, selling capital goods abroad is considered as a guarantee for positive employment effects at home and as a clear indicator for technological competitiveness. With exports thus maintaining a central position in the conduct of national macroeconomic policies, it is hardly surprising that most official export banks and insurance agencies in the advanced industrial countries provide selective support to firms which are active on international markets.
