Abstract
In terms of size, internal structure and functioning, composition, and above all political role, the European Parliament (EP) has changed more radically than any other EU institution in recent years. Although this chapter will concentrate on the evolution of the EP since the beginning of the 1990s, the EP’s emerging legislative role must be traced back to 1987, when implementation of the Single European Act (SEA) greatly increased the EP’s involvement in EU decision-making. Both the Treaty on European Union (TEU) and the Amsterdam Treaty continued that trend, which has affected not only inter-institutional relations but also internal EP political dynamics.
