Cultural Discourse

  • Camille C. O’Reilly

Cultural discourse today is often used in an attempt to remove Irish from party politics, and to place it instead in the realm of culture, tradition and heritage, or occasionally in the realm of the politics of reconciliation. This discourse has two different aspects. First, it is used to criticize Republicans and discredit the use of Irish for certain political ends. Second, it is very commonly used when people are trying to express their reasons for learning Irish or having their children learn Irish.
