Abstract
Chapter 2 dealt with the word, with its origins. But it said nothing of the function of the word, of the lexeme. Without a function a word is a mere sequence of sounds, just as a red light would be little more than decoration if it did not indicate to drivers that they should stop (or indicate whatever a red light in a ‘red light district’ indicates!).
