This book is about management and organisation development. More specifically, it is about activities which organisations engage in to help achieve specific business goals. We may wish to argue with the simplistic certainty of the assertion that ‘the only sustainable competitive advantage is an organisation’s ability to learn’, but, being in the business of management and organisation development, we are wholeheartedly in support of its broad ethos. There is an increasing belief that organisational success relates to the ways in which senior people ‘think’: that it is the ability or willingness to change cognitions which distinguishes successful from failing companies (Barr et al. 1993).
