Abstract

The news is that compulsory recruiting is in progress. In addition, the following taxes are being levied — two seers of atta per house, and one anna on each tree. May God give victory to our King. By the favour of the sirkar, the one rupee note has been supplied to the treasury; but has not yet been put into circulation. ‘Our Day’ labels have also been issued, and the proceeds of their sale go to benefit the wounded. I have put one of them on this envelope for you to see. Each lumberdar has to produce ten recruits.1 He has also to enlist a son, a brother, or other relative of his own. Thousands of men have been passed as fit and enlisted in Sargodha and sent into the Army. Our own lumberdar gets off fairly easily as he has already recruited more than the fixed number of men.
