Abstract

Mining contributes heavily, both directly and indirectly, to rapid deforestation and to the economic and social marginalization of indigenous people. This chapter analyses the impact of mining activities on indigenous people in the forested areas of Bihar and Orissa. It will be stressed that mining activities not only displace people from their land, but give rise to a rapid population increase in the area, due to migration.1
