Abstract

Spain has dramatically changed during the past twenty years. In 1986 it joined the European Communities (EC) which was an event of tremendous symbolic importance. In the same year the country voted to remain in NATO. Spain is now undergoing a process of Europeanisation and the country’s most immediate task is to eliminate the gap that exists with most of its European partners. At the same time, as a southern European country it cannot ignore the Mediterranean for reasons connected to its own regional interests.
