Equality — Then and Now

  • Chapter
Crosland and New Labour

Abstract

When I was invited to make this contribution on the legacy of Anthony Crosland, I felt both challenged and daunted. Daunted because no one could ever encapsulate his life, his thinking and his achievements — and his sheer humanity — better than Susan Crosland has herself in her remarkable biography. And challenged because Crosland’s vision of equality cries out to be restored to its proper place alongside freedom and solidarity in the trinity of socialist values.

Revised and expanded version of platform speech, Memorial meeting (13 February 1997).
