Abstract

Does New Labour believe in equality? The question sounds simple, but in fact it is not, which is one of the main reasons why no clear, convincing answer has been given. For although ‘equality’ is one of the most emotive words in the lexicon of centre-left politics, it has no settled or agreed meaning.
