Abstract
On the morning of 25 July 1898, a United States expedition on board the Gloucester landed on the shores of Guánica, a small village on the south coast of Puerto Rico. The little port town was hardly guarded by Spanish forces as they had been expecting an attack on the northern coast, and their resistance was quickly overpowered by the forces of the 6th Massachusetts and the 6th Illinois, volunteer regiments commanded by General Nelson A. Miles.1
