The New Social Unionism: A New Union Model for a New World Order

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: International Political Economy Series ((IPES))

Abstract

This is an abbreviated, updated (and footnote-free) version of a paper first published under the title of ‘Social Movement Unionism’ (Waterman 1993). 1 have traded in this title for the current one because a number of writers on trade unionism in the third world (mis)understood social movement unionism to mean an alliance between unions and ‘communities’. The latter were understood to be local and/or national-popular communities, and to exist primarily in the third world. Since my own notion was not intended to be either populist or thirdworldist, I have cheerfully abandoned it to them. Cheerfully, because I think it is possible to draw out of the present collection something closer to my original intention and the present title. Let us explore this further.
