Storytelling with children is an act of enchantment. The teacher telling a story in the classroom creates focus by determining the pace of the narrative, creating a sense of mystery and working on the imagination to visualise character and situation. The listeners, caught up in the flow of events, want to know what happens next and to see tensions resolved. They surrender to the narrative. In the drama class, many of the same elements of story are present: there are beginnings and endings, characters and issues, but the relationship between audience and ‘storyteller’ rarely aspires to a state of enchantment. The class is busy and frequently noisy; the activity is unpredictable, demanding initiative, collaboration and experiment; the teacher works as an enabler, adopting an oblique approach, drawing on the pupils’ ideas. Teacher and pupils act as partners in the making of the story.
