Abstract
The idea of establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone (NWFZ) in a populated region was conceived primarily to prevent the emergence of new nuclear-weapons states (NWS). Countries which are confident that their enemies in the region do not possess nuclear weapons may not be inclined to acquire such weapons themselves. This is why the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) encourages the creation of NWFZ.1
