Southeast Asia — The Treaty of Bangkok

  • Chapter
Book cover Nuclear Weapons-Free Zones

Abstract

Nuclear-weapon-free zones (NWFZ) seek to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and nuclear war. In Southeast Asia, such a zone constitutes, together with other mechanisms, arrangements and documents, the attempt on the part of the Association of South-east Asian Nations (ASEAN) to insulate the sub-region from great power rivalry in order to maintain a stable regional order for sustained economic growth and the peace and security of its peoples. ASEAN has had a 29-year history of promoting this goal. The 1995 Southeast Asian NWFZ (SEANWFZ) Treaty is only the most recent in a series of efforts to ensure its realisation.
