Making the Most of the Intoxication Excuse

  • Judith Rumgay

Abstract

This chapter turns from the broad strategies and characterisations employed at City court to interpret case material, to a close study of the intoxication excuse advanced in mitigation. It examines firstly the styles of impression management adopted by alcohol-related offenders at court. It then considers variations in mitigation based on intoxication or alcoholism according to types of offence and offender.
