Abstract

From the brief examination of the decision-making environment, we turn now to explore the decision-making process. This chapter is primarily concerned with strategies for simplifying the information-processing task in the courtroom. Some simplifying strategies which played a vital part in sentencing decision making in City court are identified: simple schemata and offender characterisations. The use of information about the involvement of alcohol in an offence to enhance these simplifying strategies is explored. In addition, the utility of offender characterisations, not only for explaining offences but also for formulating and justifying responses, is shown.
