Abstract
In this chapter, the focus is on the forms of nationalist movements and ethnic politics, and the nature of their support. The aim is to give a historical and geographic perspective to the study of nationalism. There is also a discussion of the nature of nationalist political behaviour, the social characteristics of nationalists, and the circumstances in which nationalist movements and ethnic politics succeed or fail. In the next three chapters, case studies are given of nationalist movements and ethnic politics in different parts of the world today.
