Abstract

Environmental policy is a rapidly growing area of planning activity. Public concern, the results of scientific research, and the role of the EU are all increasing the scope and stringency of environmental policy tools. In this chapter four aspects of environmental regulation are covered: the recent ‘greening’ of the land use planning system, already anticipated in Chapter 10; the management of water resources; pollution control including integrated pollution control and air quality management; and waste management. Issues relating to derelict and contaminated land are considered as part of regeneration policy in Chapter 13.
