Abstract

For the purposes of this chapter, fishermen’s organizations (FOs) are defined as those exclusively representing the interests of the catching sector. These interests range from informal port and regional associations often preoccupied with local issues (e.g. producer organizations) to sectoral associations concerned with a particular fishing sector (e.g. the Scottish Pelagic Fishermen’s Association (SPFA)), and national federations (e.g. the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organizations (NFFO)) negotiating management issues with the UK government and Brussels on behalf of the industry.

I am grateful to Dr Stephen Lockwood and Barrie Deas for their comments on this chapter.
