Walter Hallstein: a Personal Testimony

  • Chapter

Abstract

For more than nine years, from the beginning of 1958 to 1967, I had the privilege of working as the Secretary-General of the Commission of the European Economic Community, close to, and under the leadership of, Walter Hallstein. It was an exciting task for a young Euro-official to participate in setting up and continuing the development of this institution, which was to play a key role in the transformation of Western Europe. The Community received an additional dimension in the political vision and moral strength which Walter Hallstein consistently embodied. Today, 30 years later, I consider it an honour to be allowed to give personal testimony of the stature of this man and the quality of his significant work.
