Abstract
This brief chapter attempts to show the devastating impact of the 1991/92 drought in Zambia, especially on maize production, and makes an assessment of the food security situation. There follows a summary of the various strategies which the Zambian Government, together with the International Community and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), adopted to deal with the crisis. Finally, the paper shows the link between global issues affecting food policies and environment, and comments on food policy issues as they affect the survival of the people of Zambia.
