‘Uncertainty avoidance’ is the name of one of the five (originally four) dimensions of ‘culture’ that Geert Hofstede has given to the world of management academia and management consultancy. Hofstede’s work is familiar to many, but a brief description is given here, to provide a context for our own argument.
