Abstract

As we saw in  Chapter 1 , language is only one of the systems of signs used by human beings to communicate with each other. We use colour to indicate danger (red) and mourning (black or white, depending on cultural context), and we use symbols to show when an answer is correct (✓) and when it is incorrect (X). These are quite conscious uses of an alternative to language, though language is often used alongside them.
