Abstract

In rhetoric if not reality, no modern president has personified Jeffersonianism better than Ronald Reagan. With its underlying assumption that “government is not the solution, it’s the problem,” “Reaganomics” was supposed to include massive cuts in taxes, government spending, regulations, and the national debt, massive increases in military spending, and a balanced budget. These policies would unleash the “magic of the marketplace” that would lead America into an era of unprecedented power and prosperity.
