Abstract

With increased racist and antiracist mobilization in Europe there has been renewed discussion about the strategies and effectiveness of antiracism. In France new organizations in the mid-1980s criticized the ‘traditional’ antiracists and there has been theoretical discussion about the failure of antiracism to halt the rise of racism epitomized by the Front National (FN) (Gallissot, 1985; Taguieff, 1987; Wieviorka, 1994). In Britain earlier disputes about the different priorities of opposing Fascism or racism have resurfaced in the form of arguments about representation and the purpose of mobilization.
