Abstract

The May 1993 elections administered by UNTAC (UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia) produced a clear result. The FUNCINPEC (National United Front for an Independent, Neutral, Peaceful and Cooperative Cambodia) party led by Prince Norodom Ranariddh won 58 of the 120 seats in the Constituent Assembly with 45 per cent of the votes in a provincially based proportional representation election. The former incumbent government in the State of Cambodia (SoC), the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) led by Hun Sen, gained a substantial minority, 51 seats and 38 per cent of the votes.
